Canada Language Tests for Immigration

Taking a language test Canada approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is a required step for most immigration pathways, whether you’re applying through economic programs, family sponsorship, or humanitarian streams. Your ability to speak English or French must be proven through one of the accepted language proficiency tests.

IRCC-Approved Language Tests

IRCC accepts the following English and French language tests for Canadian immigration:

• English:
  • CELPIP: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program
  • IELTS: International English Language Testing System
  • PTE Core: Pearson Test of English
• French:
  • TEF Canada: Test d’évaluation de français
  • TCF Canada: Test de connaissance du français

These tests evaluate your ability to listen, speak, read, and write in English or French, Canada’s official languages. They must be taken through an approved testing organization and remain valid for two years from the test date.

When Is a Language Test Required?

Language testing is mandatory for applications for Canadian citizenship as well as most economic immigration programs, including Express Entry, Start-Up Visas, the Home Care Worker Immigration Pilot (HCWIP), the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP), and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP).

Minimum Language Requirements

Each immigration program has its own minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) requirement. For example:

• Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP): The minimum score depends on the National Occupational Classification (NOC) and TEER category of your job offer:
  • TEER 0 or 1: CLB 6
  • TEER 2 or 3: CLB 5
  • TEER 4 or 5: CLB 4
• Start-Up Visas: CLB 5 for all four language skills
• Home Care Worker Immigration Pilot (HCWIP): CLB 4 for all four language skills
• Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP):
  • TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3: CLB/NCLC 5
  • TEER 4: CLB/NCLC 4
