Student Work Rights in Canada 2025: Can You Work Off-Campus Without a Work Permit?
Do International Students Need a Work Permit to Work Off-Campus in Canada?
In most cases, international students studying full-time at designated learning institutions (DLIs) are allowed to take on paid employment during their studies without applying for a separate work permit, under certain conditions. This off-campus work authorization is included as part of your study permit, as long as you meet IRCC eligibility criteria.
Key conditions to be eligible to work off-campus legally without a separate work permit include:
- Holding a valid study permit that allows you to work off-campus
- Studying full-time at a DLI
- Being enrolled in a program that is at least six months long and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate
- Being enrolled in a post-secondary academic, vocational, or professional training program or, if in Quebec, a secondary-level vocational training program
- Having started your studies
- Working no more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions, and full-time during scheduled breaks
- Holding a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
I’m a Part-Time Student – Can I Still Work Without a Work Permit?
You might be eligible to work off-campus without needing a work permit if you meet all requirements, and you’re studying part-time because you’re in your last semester of your program, you don’t need a full course load to complete the program, and were a full-time student in your program up until your last semester.
When Is a Work Permit Required?
If you want to work on-campus, you generally do not need a work permit either, provided you meet IRCC’s criteria. However, if you want to work beyond the 20 hours per week limit during academic terms, or if your program or study permit does not explicitly allow off-campus work, you may need to apply for a separate work permit.
How Can Employers Verify Your Right to Work?
Employers in Canada can verify your eligibility to work by reviewing your study permit, which includes conditions about student work rights, and whether you’re authorized to engage in employment activities.
