Visitor Record in Canada: When and How to Extend Your Stay

How to Apply for a Visitor Record in Canada

If you are in Canada and need more time, a visitor record in Canada lets you extend your status as a visitor while you remain in the country. The extension process differs from getting a visitor visa to enter Canada, and it is important to know when you should apply and what evidence to include.

What is a Visitor Record?

A visitor record is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that states you have visitor status and shows the new date you must leave Canada. It is not the same as a temporary resident visa (TRV) or electronic travel authorization (eTA) and does not guarantee re-entry if you travel outside Canada.

Who Can Apply for a Visitor Record in Canada?

You can apply for a visitor record if you are currently in Canada as a visitor, or if you are in Canada as a worker or student authorized to work or study without a permit and you want to change or extend your conditions. You must apply before your current status expires. You may also be eligible to apply for an initial visitor record from outside of Canada. IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before expiry.

When to Apply for a Visitor Record

Timing matters. Apply before your current status expires, and ideally at least 30 days in advance. If your status has already expired, restoration options may be limited and specific rules apply.

Does a Visitor Record Let Me Re-Enter Canada After Travel?

No. A visitor record documents your status while inside Canada. It does not replace a temporary resident visa (TRV) or electronic travel authorization (eTA) required to return. If you plan to travel outside Canada, you must ensure you have the correct entry document to return.

Processing Times and Practical Tips

Processing times vary. Keep proof of your maintained status if you applied on time and watch IRCC’s published processing times.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Preparing An Application

  • Applying after your status has expired without filing for restoration where applicable.
  • Thinking a visitor record equals permission to re-enter Canada after travel.
  • Failing to include supporting documents showing why you should be granted an extension.
