Where and How to Apply for a Canadian Work Permit
The application process for a Canadian work permit depends on your citizenship and requirements specific to your circumstances. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process.
Canadian Work Permit Application Process for Visa-Required Nationals
If you are from a country that requires a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), you must apply online through the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Your application will be processed through IRCC, and you may be required to visit a local a Visa Application Centre (VAC).
Key steps for TRV applications:
- Submit online: Complete the application form and provide necessary documents online.
- Biometric requirements: If biometrics are required, you will receive a biometrics request letter once you submit your online application. It is your responsibility to schedule an appointment to submit your biometrics.
- Medical examination: Depending on your field of work and citizenship, a medical exam may be necessary. Complete it before submitting your application online or after receiving a request from IRCC.
- Processing times: Processing times vary based on the country you’re applying from. The process begins once your biometrics are submitted.
Work Permit Application for Visa-Exempt Nationals
If you do not require a TRV, you can apply for your work permit directly at the Port of Entry (POE) when entering Canada. Before travelling, you must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
- eTA application: The eTA digitally links to your passport and allows entry into Canada.
- Biometric submission: If biometrics are required, you will submit them in-person at the POE.
- Medical examination: Like the TRV process, a medical exam may be required. You may need to complete it before entering Canada or upon request from an immigration officer once in Canada.
Tips to Ensure a Seamless and Efficient Application Process:
- Ensure that your biometrics and medical examination (if applicable) are completed on time to avoid delays in the process.
- Keep track of processing times based on your location and application type to set realistic expectations on when to receive a decision on the application.
- Before submitting, double-check your application to make sure all details are accurate.
