Family Sponsorships
Canada’s Family Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indigenous persons under the Canadian Indian Act to sponsor eligible family members for Canadian permanent residence. This program helps reunite families by providing a straightforward pathway for eligible relatives.
At Zohil-Morton Law, we guide both sponsors and applicants in navigating the Family Sponsorship process, ensuring full compliance with immigration requirements, minimizing delays, and helping you reunite with your family in Canada.

Can I Sponsor Someone?
A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Indigenous person under the Canadian Indian Act may be eligible to sponsor a relative if they are over the age of 18, can prove that they are not receiving social assistance, except for reasons related to a disability, and can demonstrate the ability to provide for the basic needs of those they wish to sponsor. Additional criteria may apply depending on the specific circumstances of both the sponsor and the relative they wish to sponsor, such as financial support, sponsorship agreements, and income requirements, among others.
Canadian citizens living outside of Canada must show their intention to return to Canada once the individual they are sponsoring has become a permanent resident. Furthermore, permanent residents living outside of Canada cannot sponsor anyone.
Who Can Be Sponsored?
Provided all other criteria are met, the following eligible family members may be sponsored for Canadian permanent residence through the Family Sponsorship pathway:
- Spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners;
- Dependent, adopted, and step-children;
- Orphaned siblings, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren; and,
- Other relatives related by blood or adoption.
Family Sponsorship Process
To help eligible relatives become Canadian permanent residents under the Family Sponsorship program, two applications must be completed:
- The sponsor must complete a sponsorship application for their eligible relatives; and,
- The eligible relative must complete their application for permanent residence.
Both the sponsorship and permanent residence applications must be submitted together, at the same time.
