Temporary Resident Visas

Foreign nationals from visa-required countries must obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), also referred to as a Visitor Visa, before entering Canada, regardless of the purpose of their visit. It is an official document that is placed in an individual’s passport before their entry into Canada.

At Zohil-Morton Law, we assist corporations and their foreign workers in determining whether a TRV is required for their entry into Canada. If a TRV is not necessary, we will evaluate whether individuals may be eligible to enter Canada with an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.

What is a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) and Who Needs One?

A TRV is an official document that is stamped in an individual’s passport, indicating that they meet the necessary requirements to travel to Canada. The duration of a TRV can vary based on the nature of travel, and may be issued for either a single-entry or multiple-entries. Individuals from visa-required countries are generally required to submit their biometrics as part of the application, and must obtain a TRV prior to entering Canada by any means of travel.

Eligibility for a TRV

To be eligible for a Canadian TRV, individuals must meet the following general requirements:

• Have a valid travel document, such as a passport;
• Be in good health;
• Have no criminal, human rights or organized crime violations, or immigration-related convictions;
• Demonstrate ties to their home country, ensuring that they will leave Canada at the end of the period authorized for their stay; and,
• Provide proof of sufficient funds to support themselves while in Canada.

Depending on individual circumstances, foreign nationals may also be required to complete a medical examination.
