Canadian passport renewal is an essential process for Canadians planning to travel internationally. While the renewal process is generally straightforward, many individuals encounter challenges related to lost documentation, name changes, or proof of citizenship.

Who Can Renew a Canadian Passport?
You can renew your passport if your last passport:
- Was an adult passport issued when you were at least 16 years old;
- Was issued within the last 15 years;
- Was valid for 5 or 10 years;
- Has the same name, date of birth, and place of birth as you want on your new passport; and
- Has the same gender identifier as you want on your new passport.
What Documents Are Needed for a Canadian Passport Renewal?
- Your most recent Canadian passport;
- The completed renewal form (PPTC 054);
- Two identical passport photos; and,
- The applicable fees.
You do not need a guarantor or proof of citizenship for a Canadian passport renewal application.
How to Renew Your Canadian Passport
- Download the renewal application form: PPTC 054 (Adult Simplified Renewal Application).
- Prepare two identical passport photos.
- Include your most recent Canadian passport.
- Include payment by credit card or certified cheque/money order.
- Submit your application online (if eligible), by mail, or in person at a passport service location.
Processing Times for Canadian Passport Renewal in 2025
- Standard processing: 20 business days
- Urgent processing (in-person only): next business day
- Express processing (in-person only): 2 to 9 business days
- By mail: 20 business days, excluding mailing time
- Online (if eligible): 20 business days
- In person: 10 business days at select Service Canada Centres
What If You Don’t Meet the Requirements?
If you don’t meet the simplified renewal criteria, you’ll likely need to submit an application for a new adult passport. This may include additional documentation such as proof of Canadian citizenship, a guarantor, and additional documents to confirm your identity.

You are eligible for Canadian Passport Renewal if your last passport was an adult passport that was issued when you were at least 16 years old, within the last 15 years, was valid for 5 or 10 years, and has the same name, date of birth, place of birth, and gender identifier you want on your new passport.
How long does Canadian Passport Renewal take in 2025?
As of 2025, Canadian Passport Renewal processing times depend on how and where you apply. Standard processing takes 20 business days. In-person applications at select Service Canada Centres take about 10 business days. Urgent processing (if eligible) may be completed by the next business day, and express service is typically processed within 2 to 9 business days. Online and mail submissions generally take 20 business days, excluding mailing time.
Can I renew my Canadian passport online?
Yes, as of 2025, you can renew your Canadian passport online if you meet specific eligibility requirements. You must be renewing your own passport, live in Canada, and your previous adult passport must have been issued when you were at least 16 years old, within the last 15 years, and was valid for 5 or 10 years. Your previous passport must also include your place of birth and match your current name, date of birth, and gender identifier. Online renewal is not available if your passport was lost, stolen, surrendered, or needed urgently within 20 business days. A limited number of online submissions are accepted daily.
