The Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) has officially re-opened the Little Gold Creek port of entry for the summer season. This seasonal border crossing, located approximately 105 kilometres west of Dawson City, Yukon, sits along the renowned Top of the World Highway, connecting northern Canada to Alaska, USA.
Notably, Little Gold Creek is the northernmost border crossing in North America and serves as a critical gateway for adventurers, tourists, commercial transporters, and cross-border families alike. Its remote location and breathtaking surroundings make it a unique feature of Canada’s border infrastructure.
The port will operate daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, and will remain open until Monday, September 15, 2025. This extended season is especially important as it covers both the May long weekend and Labour Day in September, offering greater flexibility and convenience for those travelling during peak months.
Importantly, the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) has indicated that weather conditions may influence both the opening and closing dates of the Little Gold Creek border crossing in future years. However, the early re-opening and late-season availability this year signal a broader effort to accommodate increased travel and trade in the region.
Implications for Cross-Border Travel and Canadian Immigration
Enhanced Accessibility
The extended summer schedule significantly improves access for both Canadian and American travellers crossing between Yukon and Alaska, particularly those interested in tourism, seasonal employment, or family visits. For businesses and transporters, the port’s opening presents expanded logistical options for cross-border shipping and movement of goods.
Travel Preparedness
As with any Canadian border crossing, travellers should be prepared with the appropriate documentation to ensure a smooth crossing experience. Goods must be declared, and returning Canadian residents should be prepared with receipts for goods purchased abroad. Delays can often be avoided by ensuring that all documents are up to date and readily accessible.
Compliance and Time Zone Awareness
Travellers should note that Yukon is one hour ahead of Alaska, which can impact arrival or departure planning. Moreover, adverse weather conditions, particularly in remote northern areas, may result in sudden changes to operational hours or access routes.
