Land Acknowledgement
At Zohil-Morton Law, we acknowledge that our work takes place on traditional Indigenous territory across what is now called Ontario. We honour all the original peoples of the land including the Anishinaabeg, the Chippewa, the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Wendat and the Haudenosaunee, along with all other original peoples of this land. The land on which we operate has and continues to be governed by the Three Fire Confederacy and Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt, as well as in more recent times by the Nanfan Treaty, Treaty 13 and the Williams Treaties. We recognize the deep history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous communities across Canada and remain committed to fostering respectful relationships while supporting reconciliation.
As a law firm specializing in immigration, we acknowledge that the movement of people has shaped this land long before Canada’s borders were drawn. We strive to approach our work with awareness, respect, and a commitment to justice for all communities, including Indigenous Peoples.
Our Commitment to Reconciliation
At Zohil-Morton Law, we believe that acknowledging the land is only one step in a broader process of Truth and Reconciliation. We recognize the harms caused by colonialism, and we are committed to listening to and to learning from Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives. Our dedication to ongoing learning and meaningful action drives our efforts toward reconciliation.
We commit to:
- Advocating: declaring our commitment to reconciliation and advocating for it within Canada, particularly in the legal community.
- Educating: advancing cultural competency and understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, laws, practices, and the ongoing reconciliation process.
- Acknowledging: ensuring Indigenous territories are acknowledged through an environment that values diversity, inclusion, and respect for all communities.
- Philanthropy: supporting Indigenous reconciliation initiatives through donations of time, resources, and other contributions.
Why Land Acknowledgements Matter
Land acknowledgements are a meaningful expression of gratitude for the Individual Peoples who have historically and continue to reside on and care for this land. They provide an opportunity to reflect on our unique relationships with this land, and invite us to deepen our understanding of its rich history, while recognizing the ongoing presence, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous communities. Through land acknowledgements, we honour the past, remain mindful of the present, and actively engage in the broader journey toward reconciliation.
Moving Forward with Respect and Responsibility
Acknowledging traditional Indigenous territories is one way to recognize contemporary and historical Indigenous presence and land rights. It is a small step towards dismantling the continued impacts of colonialism and undoing Indigenous erasure in our everyday lives.
We encourage our clients, colleagues, and community members to learn more about the Indigenous history of the lands they live and work on. Land acknowledgements are a starting point, but true reconciliation requires continuous learning and meaningful action. For us, the recognition of the contributions and importance of Indigenous Peoples is connected to our commitment to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
