Electronic Travel Authorization
Foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling to Canada by air. This entry requirement applies to travellers who do not need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) but must receive electronic approval before boarding their flight. The eTA is digitally linked to the traveller’s passport and remains valid for up to 5 years or until the passport expires.
At Zohil-Morton Law, we assist travellers in determining their eligibility for an eTA, ensuring applications are properly submitted to prevent travel delays and entry issues.

Who Needs an eTA?
An eTA is required for individuals from visa-exempt countries who are travelling to Canada by air, regardless of their purpose of travel, including those transiting through Canada. Citizens from select visa-required countries may be eligible to apply for an eTA instead of a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), provided they meet specific criteria.
Who is Exempt From Requiring an eTA?
Not all travellers require an eTA. Certain individuals are exempt or unable to apply for an eTA, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Canadian citizens with a valid Canadian passport;
- Canadian permanent residents with a valid permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document;
- American-Canadian dual citizens with a valid Canadian or U.S. passport;
- Travellers who already have a valid Canadian visa;
- U.S. citizens with proper identification;
- U.S. permanent residents with valid status; and,
- Travellers entering Canada by car, bus, train, or boat.
